Excelsior has emerged virtually unscathed from the wrath of Hurricane Dean, Principal Beverley Wilson has told AgeNotes.

While thousands of Jamaicans tried to recover and pick up the pieces in the aftermath of the powerful weather system, the school’s physical plant held up well.

We had only minor damage from the hurricane at  the school. Only the awning by the Staff Room was damaged; everything else is intact,” Mrs. Wilson said when contacted by telephone shortly after the passage of the powerful hurricane. She added that even this minor damaged could have been avoided had the awning been properly secured.

Meanwhile, barring any other unforeseen circumstances, the school is now set to reopen for the new term on Monday September 10. This latest development comes in the wake of an earlier postponement from the original date of August 27, to September 3, 2007.

The reopening was originally delayed after the country’s General Election was scheduled for the same date as the school’s reopening and was pushed back one week to September 3.

Now with the subsequent rescheduling of the election to the latter date, it has forced the Ministry of Education to again change the date of school reopening to Monday, September 10, 2007.
