Some alumni see the difficulties faced by our alma mater and ask “why”; others like Lorna-Dee Dunn (left), Colleen Hunt and the Adopt-A-Block group see the same challenges and ask “what can we do to reverse this troubling trend?”
After a successful first year of spearheading a mentorship program, they have decided to up the ante by issuing a fresh appeal for other alumni to join the initiative.
In a recently circulated letter, Lorna-Dee, one of the group's coordinators, outlined their goals for the future of the program and issued an appeal for other Excelsiorians to make a commitment to the project.
“We need a commitment for 5 years from each volunteer but we realize that without the support of the teachers, parents/guardians and the school administration the program will not achieve its desired goals” Lorna Dee told AgeNotes.
She added that a Mentorship Program is a first step in getting more alumni involved in the school community. In this way, she thinks, people will have a first hand assessment of the needs of the school and be in a better position to lobby for a change and solicit assistance.
The mentorship program is seen as the basis for the holistic development of the school through the involvement of all the stakeholders.
