LEMUEL HENRY SCHOLARSHIP
The Lemuel Henry scholarship (LHS) was founded principally on the initiative and commitment of the Class of 1980 to honor the memory and contributions of Lemuel Henry; an Excelsorian who lived generously and passionately, and who embraced the ideals of our school motto, Age Animo, by living and doing everything with his might.
Lemuel Henry provided a model of trans-national citizenship, where home and ‘abroad’ became entangled spaces of his life that he carefully built and protected. He exemplified an open love and civic mindedness which inspired his tangible contributions supporting the school’s esprit de corps, wherever located.
His sense of commitment to community, and his naturally protective spirit was nurtured from the early days of his membership in the cadets, and found further expression in his highly commended years of service in the United States Navy. The Lemuel Henry Scholarship likewise preserves this spirit of community by linking the support of Excelsorians, home and ‘abroad,’ represented through the Excelsior Alumni Association ( EAA) and the local chapter of the Excelsior Past Students’ Association ( EPSA), in order to realize this special award.
The qualities to be recognized by this award will include, not just the awareness of the wider set of relations that sustain our possibilities to excel as individuals, but also, excellence itself. Lemuel Henry maintained a strong love for the sciences, especially chemistry, and was a keen participant in sports, in particular swimming and water polo. These qualities ensured the training of intellectual capacities, and supported the vital enhancement of our social passions for competition, as well as, cooperation and play.
The LHS will provide a line of support to guide other students to develop their own qualities of excellence, and to continue the expression of camaraderie, academic passion and superior performance, as well as, a respect for the quintessential spirit of ‘community,’ gathered through acts of living love, working and playing together for the gain of each and all.
