In advance of Founder’s Day 2010, alumni yesterday celebrated the 79th Anniversary of the school’s establishment with a variety of activities in Jamaica and North America. The school will officially commemorate Founder’s Day tomorrow, Tuesday, January 19.

With prayer, song and sumptuous refreshment, the Excelsior Past Students Association hosted its annual Brunch & Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 17, 2010 in the school’s auditorium. Held under the theme Celebrating Outstanding Contribution in Medicine, the EPSA recognized a number of past students who have distinguished themselves in the medical profession.

Following the prayer service there was a tour of the newly refurbished science lab during which alumni and other guests were shown the progress made in the three-year old science laboratories upgrade project. The tour was preceded by an entertainment segment led by past student Conroy Cooper of the Fabulous Five band.

Elsewhere, in other Founders Day related activities, The Excelsior Alumni Association of Florida accepted an invitation from The Episcopal Church of  the Holy Family to mark the milestone with its congregation. About two dozen members of the Association, including some who also worship at the church, settled into the pews to worship and say a word of thanks to Excelsior and its Founder Dr. A. Wesley Powell.

In a brief speech Althea Brown-Robinson,Vice-President of the Excelsior Alumni Association of Florida, thanked the church for the invitation and gave a brief synopsis of the Excelsior Story. Later in the week, New York-based alumni will mark Founder’s Day with a fund-raising dance.

As the schools 80th anniversary looms in 2011, plans are now in the works to commemorate the milestone with a number of special activities.
