Alumnus Evadne Coye ('63), Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Canada, has been appointed to serve as the Permanent Secretary in the Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Ministry.
She succeeds Ambassador Gail Mathurin who will next month take up the post of Director General in the office of Trade Negotiations (formerly Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery).
Ambassador Coye was appointed High Commissioner to Canada in January 2007 after her assignment as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union.
She also served as non-resident Ambassador to France, Ireland, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands, as well as High Commissioner to Botswana and South Africa.
She also previously served as Under-Secretary in the Foreign Affairs Ministry with responsibility for Bilateral and Western Hemispheric Relations and subsequently, for Multilateral Relations.
Ambassador Coye is expected to assume duties as Permanent Secretary in November 2009.
The ministry says her successor as High Commissioner to Canada is to be announced shortly.
